Do Parents Talk Too Much About Their Children?

Recently, I was hanging out with several of my girlfriends. There were four of us and out of the four, only one was childless. It was Lisa, the only one who had a full time office job. While we were eating lunch, it became apparent that she just sat there not saying much while the rest of us blabbered away. When we noticed and asked her why, she blunty said, “Well, all you guys have been doing is talking about your kids.” We all looked at each other and were dumbfounded. She said that almost everything that came out of our mouth was about our kids. I personally, did not even notice that I was doing that. Then we started wondering about why I couldn’t help talking about how adorable James looked like imitating a dinosaur after we got him his dino dave twin quilt with pillow sham or how my friend’s daughter looked so cute with her butterfly costume.

After we all realized that we simply talk too much about our children, we apologized to our friend and vowed to not talk about our kids for the rest of the afternoon. I never gave it much thought afterward until I came across this blogger wondering if parenting “makes parents stupid.” I guess, as much as I hate to admit it, being a mother or parent somewhat frizzes our brain and makes us talk about our children all the time. Now, I’m more conscious, but no matter how hard I try, I still find myself yapping about my kids whenever I’m with other people. Oh well, just another part of parenting, I guess.
