“Because I Said So…” Sound Familiar?

Have you ever been told that you sound exactly like your mother? So far this hasn’t happened to me, although I am starting to notice some itty-bitty little things that my mother once did and that now I’m doing. For instance, last week I was trying to get my little girl to pull back her ballet lessons drape to let some sunshine in. For some reason, she kept ignoring me and when I gave her a stern lecture, she started crying. Out of frustration and stress, I found myself echoing something my mom always told me when I was a kid: “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about.” This always stuck with me since I used to always kid my older sister that she (not me) was becoming like my mom to her kids.

There was one study conducted among 3,000 mothers about the kinds of phrases that were likely to show up in their succeeding generations. The top came out “Because I said so,” and my mom’s favorite phrase, the one I mentioned, was also in the top ten. It was funny to find out that I was indeed turning out like my mother. I’m not sure whether it’s a bad thing or a good thing, although I’m hoping it’s the latter.
