Learning A Thing or Two From Kids
As a mother, it’s difficult to teach some things to my children especially when it comes to personal stuff like empathy and compassion. Sometimes, I find that its easier to show them that doing something is better as opposed to actually giving them a lecture about it. One time from work, I found Michael (he’s 10) sitting on his new sports collage twin quilt with sham. He said that he wanted to talk to me about something. He handed me a flyer from school where a volunteer program for helping the elderly was plastered. They had volunteered in this project about a month ago. Their class went to spend the day at a nursing home to help the elderly and keep them company for the day.
What shocked me was what he said next, he asked me if we could go ahead and visit them for the holidays and bring them something nice. He said that he spoke with some of his friends at school and they asked their parents too. What’s more was that he offered me about $300 that he had saved up from his allowance and asked me to use the money to buy ingredients for food or something that we can bring and give out. At that point, I didn’t want to make a scene, but I was fighting back the tears at what my son said.
I am so proud of him. I know it can be tough to live in the world since you can easily get desensitized and think that volunteer work is something that you would want to do just to improve your credentials or opportunities for college or work. The fact is that it takes more than that and I’m hoping that my son and my other children will live by it.
