When Children Become Too Exposed To The Business Of Show Business
As we were putting up my daughters personalized girly girl kid’s room sign, one of my friends, who was visiting us that day, remarked that someday, my daughter’s name is going to be up in a marquee. She has a knack for being the center of attention and admittedly is talented and would only need guidance and development. But as her parents, my husband and I don’t have any showbiz aspirations for her. Exciting as the prospect of this may sound, we’re not sure if we can handle it.
Personally, I’m fine with a little exposure and competition now and then. It helps develop the child’s confidence. But to turn this into something else, such as putting kids through the motions of pageant after pageant after pageant or insane amount of singing competitions, I think that’s it’s pushing it too much.
There are some parents, however, who seem to make this their goal. They put a huge stock on their kid’s talents and abilities, sometimes to the point of making a career out of it. Worse, we see a lot of these realityTV celebrities having kids themselves and letting these kids become exposed to that kind of like early on.
I think that’s really drawing the line with what’s passable as entertainment. Then again, when it comes to entertainment, I find that the envelopes are pushed and pushed even further. This is why, as a parent, I won’t be able to survive having my children in this kind of environment.
