Becoming a Fun Parent

trumpet420Sometimes, the routine of instilling discipline in your kids take away all the fun out of becoming a parent. There are days when I have to be very militaristic or obsessive-compulsive about making sure the ruffle purple twin quilt with pillow sham is straightened up as soon as my kids are up….cleanliness is next to godliness, right? This doesn’t seem so bad except that I sometimes forget that one of the most important rule to becoming an effective parent, is to make sure you’re that fun parent.

It’s not like you would have to leave kids be and never teach them the consequences of behaving so rowdy or inappropriately. It’s not like you would have to be called a bad parent if not everything is spic and span. Sometimes, becoming a fun parent, ergo a good parent, is in allowing some flexibility. You don’t always have to be rigid or by the book. The sheets don’t always have to be straightened up as soon as the kids are up. They don’t always have to look so neat all the time. When they are late for an appointment, it’s not the end of the world.

Parenting is not supposed to be a rigid chore. You have to learn to bend the rules sometimes to become more relatable and approachable to your kids.
