Should You Repair Your Child’s Imperfection?

Not all parents think that inborn imperfections in children need to be fixed. Of course, as parents, we only want what’s best for our children but how far should we go to help them? This was a dilemma that my friend, Jackie, went through. She was excited to have her first child that she already filled his play room with various toys including a kiddie-ups cowboy rocking horse. She gave birth to Jeremy, he was healthy and all except that he was born with a cleft palate. It was a bit difficult at first, but after much consultation, she decided that she should have it fixed. However, this did not sit well with her parents as well as some of her friends. Her husband was okay with it, but most people weren’t. She grew up in  a very traditional family and she was always taught that everything is beautiful as they are. Hence, she felt confused with whether to completely push through with the operation since obviously it means that her child is imperfect.

However, there is no denying the fact that going through with the surgery right now while her kid is still a baby means that she won’t have to worry about her kid being teased in school once he grows up. She says that she wants to be able to give her child a fair chance in his life. Even though it might be a tough decision, she decided to push through with everything.
