Raising A Tomboy

I’ve got a niece who refuses to see anything girly in her bedroom. It may seem quite unusual for a little girl. Most often, they would really prefer flowers, princess and pinks in there. But not Ella, my 5 year old niece. She refuses sleep on the My Rainbow Twin Sheet Set her mom has set up for her. She also refuses to play with anything girly (like dolls) but is quite active and plays boys games better.

Ella is growing up to be a tomboy. And for now, her parents doesn’t seem to be that worried. They believe that some girls definitely go through this stage and that they will soon outlive it.

I am reminded of this celebrity baby, Shiloh, the daughter or famous parents Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The other day, when picture of her in short hair appeared on the internet, people cried foul over how her parents are raising her. It seems they are encouraging her to be a tomboy. This is in full contrast with how Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes raise Suri, their daughter, who is, early on, exhibiting very, very feminine traits.

I’m not sure about raising girls to be tomboys but I think that it’s great their parents are allowing them to express their individuality. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with becoming a tomboy, right?
