Should You Give Your Child a Cell Phone?

The other day, I was helping my eldest, Michael, clean up the all star sports table & 4 stool set when he asked me a question. He wanted to know if it was possible for him to get his very own cellphone. At first, I thought that he was kidding, but then I realized that he wasn’t and he was dead serious in wanting to know if he could have one. I honestly didn’t know what to say, I guess because I didn’t think it was important. He went on to tell me that he wanted one because it would be nice to keep in touch with us; so that we would know where he is all the time. Although this seemed like a great deal, I told him that I would have to talk to his dad about it since I feel that he is a bit too young to have a cell phone.

Anyway, I always see children, sometimes as young as kindergarten, carry around a cellphone. I always found this unusual since I feel that children should not have a cellphone until they reach highschool or something. The fact that it’s convenient for your child to have a phone and that you can reach them anytime, it also leaves a lot of room for possible problems. Personally, I think that children shouldn’t have phones with them at such a young age. I think it would be best if they get it once they get a bit older and more mature.
