The Television as Baby Sitter
Clutching his Pirate Treasure Pillow to his chest, I found my little nephew propped in front of the television watching his favorite animated video alone in the room when I came to visit them two days ago. His mother was in the next area, talking to someone on the phone, occasionally glancing his way. I was supposed to say something about this, but I figured I shouldn’t meddle with her parenting style.
I’m a couch potato as much as the couch potato. If there’s anything I’d love to do, it’s watching television. It’s just that, I don’t particularly advocate having TV as the babysitter, especially when the child is so young and so impressionable. There are plenty of researches that support how bad this is for children and these are factual reports with bothersome results that say that kids exposed to too much television can be any of the following:
1. Grow up obese. Because they only sit there all they, they will not burn out fat and calories. Thus, they will grow up to be unhealthy.
2. Grow up to become problem children. Because there’s too much going on in that small screen, kids can easily pick up values that will shape who they are. What if these are values that reinforces poor behavior?
Are you treating TV as your baby sitter? Maybe it’s time to evaluate your parenting style if you do.
