Spanking: Disciplining or Aggression?
Does spanking lead to discipline or aggression? This is one of the things we discussed when a couple of us mom-friends got together. We were all sharing disciplining tactics and found out that we all have very divided opinions about spanking. I use this as a last resort with my kids, when all means have been exhausted and they still would misbehave.
There was an instance where my son broke his newly bought All Star Sports Clothestand/Growth Chart from playing too much with it. The piece was literally just hours old, freshly delivered, when he decided to try karate chops on it. Frustrated, I almost had to spank him for wasting such a purchase. But I was aware that the kid was just being a kid so I had resorted to talking instead. He understood the point better.
Another Mom in the group shared that her kids does get a hard beating from their father when they are misbehaving. The father would spank them with belts, even for very simple offenses like forgetting to brush their teeth, which we all agreed was too much punishment.
Spanking tends to be abused by parents who cannot also handle their emotions really well. The rule of the thumb must be that if you are frustrated, either with your kids or your own problems, you should never ever resort to this form of discipline and take it out on the children.
