At What Age Should Parents Let Kids Start With Swimming Lessons?

Screen shot 2010-04-27 at 2.20.22 PMI was cleaning out my eldest son’s room the other day and I found this Personalized Beach Volleyball Kid’s Room Sign which I remember we got him the day he officially spent a whole summer without us, but with the company of cousins and friends at the beach. I wasn’t too worried something was going to happen to him. He was about nine years old then and was pretty much like a merman or something like that, when it comes to staying in the water. He started learning how to swim rather early so it was like the water is his second home.

Then I remember a discussion I’ve had with my other mom-friends and how none of us actually know how to swim.  It was surprised to learn that  a lot of us had parents who didn’t have us get formal training in swimming. Our children, on the other hand, are taking part in all kinds of lessons available, including swimming. One of them even had her baby’s swimming lesson starting when her child was merely one and a half year old.

One year old and already learning to swim? Is that safe? Isn’t that really early? At what ideal age do you let your child learn swimming?
