Understanding Grief in the Eyes of a Child

Children often understand the most complicated things in their own little way. Hence, I wasn’t overly surprised when I found my little daughter kneeling on her little girl prayer stool and praying. I asked her what she was doing and she calmly told me that she was praying for Grandma to feel better. My mother has just been admitted to the hospital because of complications in her lungs and now she’s relying on a machine to help her breathe properly. She’s in stable condition but the doctor’s aren’t sure whether she’s going to get better or go worse. Only time will tell.

A lot of parents think that they have to fully explain things like this to children, however, children are special. They see things and understand situations in their own little way. Sometimes, they understand it better than most adults do. Of course, they might not fully grasp the pain of losing a grandparent or a mother but they can get it. Grief can be a difficult thing to deal, not just for sons and daughters burying their parents but especially for parents grieving over their child. It is important to go ahead and be strong and at the same time provide the proper support that your child needs when they are suffering from a loss.
