Thoughts on Gay Parenting
The other day, as I was tucking in my daughter in her mermaids toddler bedset, she asked me if it was possible to have two daddy’s. Now, I knew what she meant but I was unsure on how to answer her properly so I just winged it and asked her why she wanted to know. She then told me that she saw, Chrissy (her classmate), having two daddy’s pick her up. She said that she asked Chrissy about it and she just said that she loves having two dads even if most of the time, they act like moms. Now, I know that gay parenting is often a tough thing to explain to a child, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
There have been many studies involving the effects of having a same sex couple raise a child and that of regular heterosexual couples. Most of the studies show that children raised by same sex couples are no better off or more worse than those raised by regular couples. Because of this results, there is strictly no reason for prohibiting gay couples to parent a child. However, three states are still explicitly against it, namely Florida, Utah and Mississippi. Arkansas is still in the process of debating the matter and over 29 states have already given their approval for legalizing gay adoptions. I cannot imagine how gay couples parenting a child can be any different. I think as long as they understand what a child really needs and works to take care and provide it, then it should be alright.
