When a Mommy is Mistaken to be the Nanny

My cousin recently confided that she felt so bad about being mistaken as her own child’s nanny when they went to the supermarket the other day. They had just got back from the cleaners to pick up the Julia Queen Sheet set she had done and headed for the supermarket to do some quick grocery shopping with her child. As they were lining up at the counter, the woman behind her was making her little girl smile. Then she politely commented that it must be tough to babysit a black child. The thing is, my cousin’s husband is African American and thus, although it’s rare, her baby girl, Jessie, is more like her father than her. She has darker skin and would be easily mistaken as a black girl unless you look closely. Hence, my cousin being a pale girl, it would seem that they are not related.

Although it is very hurtful and it bothers my cousin, she’s trying to put everything in stride. I realized that a lot of interracial couples and those who choose to go for a transracial adoption often go through this same problem. Even though most of these parents and people do understand their situation and why some people react like they do, it still hurts sometimes, especially if you are a parent and want to just take care and love your child.
