Creepy Children’s Books
The other day, I was tucking my son to sleep in his surfing USA twin quilt with pillow sham and read him one children’s book that I got from the last time I went to the bookshop. It was called The Giving Tree. Now, I know that if you have read this book or have heard about it’s story, then you might be cringing that I actually read it to my son. The truth is that when I first scanned through it and read it, it wasn’t a big deal. It wasn’t until I actually read it and thought about it when I realized that the meaning of the story can be entirely misconstrued. And true enough, I found a lot of people discussing the story of the same book and its actual meaning. Now, I know that people are entitled to their own opinion and reading through The Giving Tree can definitely form a lot of other meanings.
Basically, the book is about a tree that loves a boy. She gives him everything that he needs as he grows older. He takes her fruit when he’s hungry or has no money. He takes her branches and stump if he needs to build something. In the end, he comes back a grown man and rests on the tree’s stump. The tree is still happy to welcome him back even though she was clearly taken advantaged of. A lot of people have interpreted the story as a mother’s or parent’s undying love and sacrifice for their own children. However, others also look at it as a story that showcases how the boy abused the tree and never bothered to give anything back.
