Brothers but Not Brothers
Recently, my husband told me of a friend he has that had problems coming up with last names for their children. Apparently, they’re not sure whether to give them his last name or his wife’s last name. Most people often think that this is a simple matter; as easy as picking that Dino Dave blue pillow for your son, but the thing is that, many people have problems coming up with these things. There are plenty of common solutions that parents often go for. For instance, there’s the hyphen solution. Include both the mothers as well as the father’s last name. Then again, this does bring about the question of whose name goes first; the husband or the wife?
Another solution is to simply go for the husband’s last name and use the wife’s as the middle name. There’s nothing wrong with this as long as the couple is willing to compromise. Then there are the unusual solutions. For personal reasons that seemed relevant that time, one couple decided to adopt a different last name for their son (his father’s) and a different last name for their daughter (her mother’s.) It might seem like a harmless decision but that fact is that it creates a ton of complexities in children as well as confusion concerning legalities.
Whatever last name you adopt for your child, make sure that you consider your child’s future along with it. It wouldn’t hurt if you also think about what could be best for you as a couple and family as well.
