Mommy Knows Best
Recently, my sister was telling me how her daughter was beaming while telling her that girls are smarter than boys. She was apparently really pleased at the fact that she managed to put together her firefighter table & 2 stool set after she broke it in the first place. Although my sister and I just laughed it off at that time, there might be some truth to the saying “mother knows best” or that girls are smarter than boys. A recent study conducted showed that women or mothers brains actually grow a bit bigger in size just months after giving birth to a child. This makes them smarter than they were before. Now, please know that this study was conducted on a tiny sample and that the findings are preliminary at best. However, it is an interesting find, don’t you think?
Basically, this same study showed that women who have just given birth and have “positive” interactions with their infants actually showed an increase in volume for the gray matter in the midbrain. This same gray matter is thought to be responsible or associated with things like judgment, reasoning and emotional processing. I guess, this comes at a crucial time when mothers are likely to need better adaptation skills now that they will be dealing with a child. As mentioned, further research is still needed to see whether this is applicable to all mothers and what happens to those that have a negative interaction with their newborn? Hopefully, we’ll know really soon.
