Children and Voting
With voting season just gone by, it’s not hard to imagine that our children would one day be doing the same thing as us adults. Now, for parents who are into teaching their children all these new fangled ideas, the opportunity of teaching children about how to vote is a necessary ritual. However, when is a child too young to understand this complicated process of voting? My friend called me up the other day and our conversation somehow got directed to the elections. She was telling me how her sons had been using the time to read bench seat w/ storage as a makeshift voting booth ever since their father explained how voting works. It was very cute since both her children are only 4 & 6 years old.
As for my own children, my husband has also explained how the voting process goes to my preteen but of course, the other two couldn’t care less about what it was about. Now, back to my question, when is a great time to teach children about the importance of the election process and why we even do it? For me, I think that as soon as they are old enough to understand the concept and actually get to follow what you mean with the political jargon, then they should be ready. My preteen seems to be handling it great but who’s to say that children that are much younger can’t understand this simple but sometimes complicated process?
