Yes, Teenager Brains Are Different
For many parents, trying to figure out what goes on inside their teen’s brain is like trying to solve the biggest puzzle on earth. We all know that teens are a bit difficult to handle and to understand but alas there’s a reason behind it. For one, even though you might have always wondered how your sweet little darling daughter, who used to fix her Olivia pink twin sheet set when she woke up every morning; has not turned into this gothic styled girl who refuses to wear anything but black. The fact is, teens brains do function differently from that of adults or children. For instance, they use most of their amygdala instead of their frontal cortex to process emotions makes them more unpredictable and erratic. Their circadian rhythm as well as the part of their brain that handles motor skills and eye coordination are different. Hence, teens seem to have a knack for dealing with the complex things in life, like say, computer gaming.
It’s these things that make the teenager act the way they do. As a parent, it’s important to know that your son or daughter isn’t the only one that goes through these periods. Of course, this is no excuse to use as well when it comes to your child misbehaving. Let them know that you are still doing things in mind and setting up curfews or other house rules for their sake. Making them understand and talking to them will help you understand each other’s perspective.
